A day in the life of a personal trainer
Usually the alarm goes off somewhere between 5am and 6.30am depending on what the morning client load looks like. I like to get up an hour before I see anyone as its about the only time of the day I have to myself. I always eat a massive breakfast which is usually horse feed bag sized portion of porridge and ultra strong coffee minutes after I open my eyes. For the rest of the hour i pack various different kit bags for the day depending on where i am working and what i will be doing and take the first shower of the day before rushing out of the door.
Trainers at work anti social hours, that is the design of the job, we have to fit around our clients more social working hours. I will generally train clients back to back from 6.30am until 11am. Next; more coffee and food, and often a second shower as I will have usually had one or two running style sessions during the morning.
Between 11am and 3pm a personal trainer is usually the quietest. I like to think I could nap or rest during the day but I am often too pumped or feel too pressured by paperwork to actually do this. Very often I run around town doing chores, or some housekeeping or if I’m training for a particular race or event this will be the time I will train. I like to meet up with friends once or twice a week for lunch as during the evenings I have to work late and I would hate my social life to disappear!
Just before I start work again I eat a huge meal, then its back to the grindstone from 3pm ish, I usually train people back to back until about 9pm. I used to work until 10pm as I found people were happy to train late if I couldn’t fit them in earlier but these days I try to avoid booking anyone after 8pm as I like to wind down before bed.
I also take my oral health very seriously as it's a holistic thing so I make sure I make regular visits to the dentist for check ups and thorough cleaning.
I tend to snack from about 6pm onwards with things I carry in my bag just to keep my energy up, I do lots of active sessions late into the evening so I metabolise food fast and often come home late and wired so I have spent years trying to work out a good wind down routine. This for me involves sitting quietly staring at a screen without talking to anyone and zoning out after or before a bath. Bed is early at 10pm so that I rest my body enough for the next day.
Being a Brightonfit personal trainer is physically demanding and requires constant workouts to maintain the necessary level of fitness to do the job properly.
